REVIEW: S.E. Balland Les Beaux Jours “Coteaux du Giennois” 2006
January 26th, 2009 by Jeff
Price: ~$16
Type/Region:
Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley in France.
Nose:
Milk chocolate, blueberry, and leather on the nose.
Palate:
Almost full bodied with a very pretty start of chalk, red fruit, bright acidity, and…as it moves through your mouth… an underlying topicality to the fruit. I almost want to say chocolate covered banana. Firm tannin throughout but the fruit and acidity keep them from dominating. This is really well balanced. Long, juicy tootsie roll finish.
Synopsis:
This is a really fun wine. There is much to discover in it as it opens up, and I believe it would be pretty food friendly. It seems to me that the maturity of the wine is rolling along pretty well, and as it’s a 2006, I don’t foresee this lasting forever. Drink now through early 2011.
The Som Rating: 7/10 Scarlett Johansson Heads
