REVIEW: Margerum Uber Syrah 2006

June 30th, 2009 by Jeff

Nose:

Ooh, smokey blackberry, warm bacon fat, and underlying rosemary.

Palate:

Dry, full bodied, purposeful acid.  Nice fruit flavors of raspberry and blackberry, with chocolate and vanilla coming through the darker spice notes, and a long meaty finish.

Synopsis:

This bottle is the product of the best barrels from seven different vineyards in Santa Barbara County with which the good folks at Margerum do business.  There were 3600 bottles produced, and this particular bottle was #3323.  There are few wines I enjoying tasting more than a good Syrah.   But you know what?   They don’t sell well, and it drives me nuts!  I can’t figure what’s not to love.   Big, plush fruit, spicy kick, and food friendly acidity.  I fully admit that the $50 price on this is not what most people are running to the stores for, but one can get very good Syrah for a good price…i.e. the Cline Syrah for $10.99.
