Wines featured in today’s show:

  • Hofer Grüner Veltliner 2008  (~$12)
  • Don Frutos Verdejo/Sauvignon Blanc 2007  (~$7)
  • Sangria Classico  (~$10)

Recommended food pairings from The Som:

It’s too bad that Don Frutos was corked because it has become one of my favorite summer sippers to be sure.  Medium bodied, tart limey fruit, and a clean finish.  It’s not really meant for big dinners, but served with a variety of appetizers (or “mezedies” as the Greeks like to say) and you have a very user friendly, multi-purpose wine.

As for the Grüner Veltliner, I say fry up some fish and chips, crack some Hofer and have one hell of a good night.  What does fried food love?  Acidity.  That’s why you squirt lemon on it and drink a beer.  The acidity cleans the palate of the residual oil and preps it for the next bite.  The Grüner Veltliner is all about acidity yet has enough oompf to compete with the fish.  I’m eating this as I type and am quite pleased.

Have some friends over on the hottest day of the year, pour some Sangria in a clear pitcher chock full of ice, set it on the patio table and let me know what happens.  It will probably end up being the best day you have this summer.

To make your own Sangria, here’s a decent recipe you can use.
