REVIEW: Vatistas 2008

August 27th, 2009 by Jeff

60% Asproudi

40% Assyrtiko

Laconia, Greece (or Sparta to be exact)

Impressively strong notes of ripe pear, apricot and wild herbs.

Full Bodied, passable acidity.  An almost oily texture in the mouth.  Stone fruits, white peach and some tropical fruits as well with a spice note of vanilla.  The fruit tang hangs on tight throughout the long finish.

One of the great things about Greek wine is that they concentrate on their native varietals.  Yes you will see some Cab, Chard or even some Pinot Noir in blends and even by themselves but the fun stuff is theirs.  Even though they have been making wine for two thousand years they really didn’t get their modern wine production act together until they joined the European Union in 1981.  Asproudi and Assyrtiko are two often used white grapes that you will see more of coming out of the Peloponnese.
