REVIEW: Chateau Chateau Skulls 2007
November 18th, 2009 by Jeff
Price: ~$21.00
Blend:
60% Grenache
40% Mataro (Mourvedre)
Nose:
Raisins, toast, white pepper, and cherry juice (note that the fruit note hits last).
Palate:
Medium bodied, surprisingly good acidity. Cranberry, bing cherry, and raspberry with a singular line of pie spice. Snooze.
Synopsis:
I’ve tried this wine (this vintage) a couple of times and every time I do I have high hopes and every time my hope are dashed. This thing costs $21.00 and has the most bad-ass label in wine label history. It’s from southeast Australia, so I expect big, juicy fruit…and it’s not there. So I say to myself, “Jeff, that should be a great, a medium bodied, good acid wine with some nuance, fruit, and layers.” But then I realize that the nuance and layers are missing.
It is wine with great promise that ultimately comes up short for me.
The Som Rating: 5/10 Scarlett Johansson Heads
